Green hydro-electric power plant to come on line

Ha Noi – One turbine of Viet Nam's first green electricity plant will begin operation at the end of this month, the operators announced on Monday.

Deputy Head of Chiem Hoa Hydro-Electric Power Plant project Nguyen Huu Phat said the plant was Viet Nam's first low water column hydro electric power project.

A low water column means there is a low differentiation between the water reservoir and the dam.

Using a low water column helps maintain river flow so it has less affect on the environment. With only a 2.5m water level differentiation, the reservoir does not have to be large, meaning no residents have to be moved from the area.

With a total investment capital of over VND1700 billion ($US81 million), the plant will have three turbine generators and a production capacity of 48MW. The last turbine of the plant is expected to put into operation in October this year.

Upon completion, the plant plans to generate 193.4 million kwh of electricity to the national grid, and at the same time provide an ecological tourist reservoir with jobs for local workers. – VNS
