Local IT experts clean up at ASEAN information awards

HA NOI — Viet Nam's information technology (IT) experts have won 10 of 16 ASEAN regional awards for chief information officers (CIOs).

The awards, started in 2005 under the initiative of the International Data Group, recognise CIOs whose practical initiatives and leadership have greatly contributed to the development of their organisations and socio-economics.

The 16 winners defeated more than 400 candidates from the 10 ASEAN countries. Ten were from Viet Nam, two from Thailand and one each from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Cambodia.

They were chosen on the basis of their excellence in IT applications and their strategic and innovative contributions that boosted an organisation's business.

Speaking at a ceremony to honour the Vietnamese winners, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Minh Hong said he hoped CIOs throughout the region would continue sharing their experiences, which was a great help to furthering IT in Viet Nam.

The Vietnamese CIOs included the director of the Central Traditional Medicine Hospital, Tran Quoc Binh; the director of the Construction Ministry's Information Centre, Dang Kim Giao; the director of the Ha Noi National University's Computer Centre, Nguyen Nam Hai; the chairman of Nghe An People's Committee, Ho Duc Phuoc; and the director of the Viet Nam State Bank's Credit Information Centre, Pham Cong Uan.

During the event, 12 IT products were selected as outstanding by the CIOs. They included DELL laptops, IBM host computers, the Cisco data-security system, the Ricoh photography machine and Policom TV conferencing system.

The ceremony was organised by the Ministry of Information and Communications, Ministry of Home Affairs and Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry. More than 60 CIOs have been selected since the awards began. — VNS
