Dial-up internet service to end as subscribers keep dwindling

HA NOI — The Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) will stop providing dial-up internet services from July 15 due to the decreasing number of subscribers.

According to VNPT Deputy General Director Nghiem Phu Hoan, the State-owned telecoms giant has received approval from the Ministry of Information and Communications to stop the service.

The Viet Nam Data Communication Company (VDC), a subsidiary of the VNPT in charge of internet provision, said the number of dial-up subscribers had experienced a sharp decline in the last five years due to the popularity of high-speed ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) internet.

Other internet service providers (ISPs) in Viet Nam such as Viettel, FPT Telecom and Netnam already ceased providing dial up services fours years ago.

There are more than 10,000 dial-up subscribers in the country compared to 4.5 million subscribers to ADSL broadband.

Dial-up internet access is a form of internet access that uses the facilities of the public switched telephone network to establish a dialled connection to an ISP via telephone lines.

Internet first came to Viet Nam in 1997, with subscribers numbering at only 200,000 in 2000 in a country with a population of about 90 million. However, the last two decades have seen rapid expansion of internet services, with 10 million users in 2005, 20 million in 2008 and over 30 million by the end of May 2012. — VNS
