Students learn to protect environment

Primary-school students in HCM City have been encouraged to participate in an Environment Protection Programme launched on Wednesday by the Department of Education and Training together with local firms.

The programme aims to encourage students to protect the environment as well as teach them facts about climate change, pollution and recycling.

HCM City helps new co-operatives

The HCM City People's Committee will support new co-operatives with financing of up to VND30 million (around US$2,000) each through 2015 to help them develop.

The co-operatives should be in certain fields like agriculture, rural credit, rural sanitation and water supply, floriculture, bonsai and eco-tourism.

Bac Kan raises $1bn for charity

The remote northern province of Bac Kan has launched the Month for Poor People charity programme for offices and businesses.

It has received more than VND24 billion (US$1.1 million) from offices, enterprises and individuals so far. The money has been handed over for building and upgrading schools and charity homes, and for medical treatment for poor women and children.

Children's Village opens doors

Viet Nam's 14th SOS Children's Village has opened in the central city of Quy Nhon.

The US$2.5 million village has been funded by the International SOS Children's Village and Germany-based Vorwerk Group.

It has a kindergarten with 190 students, and 14 family houses with 85 children.

Quang Binh builds apartments for poor

Hundreds of workers and other low-income people in Quang Binh Province have benefited from a housing programme launched in 2008 by the province's Labour Union in co-operation with local enterprises.

More than 200 apartments have been handed over so far, and more than 1,000 others will be provided this year.
