Summer Career Programme offer jobs

The HCM City Supporting Centre for Students' 2012 Summer Career Programme has created part – and full-time jobs for more than 5,000 students and graduates from local colleges and universities. The programme attracted more than 200 employers in various fields, including garments, electricity and food processing.

The programme will continue through September, offering 4,000 jobs at 350 foreign and domestic enterprises in the region.

Man arrested after police chief's home bombed

Khanh Hoa Police yesterday arrested a 56-year-old man suspected of setting off an explosion at the home of provincial police chief Colonel Tran Ngoc Khanh early on Monday morning.

The suspect, Nguyen Viet Truong, director of Song Lo Company Ltd, allegedly admitted creating the blast to stop Khanh's ongoing investigation into his business. Police claim they confiscated more than 30 kilos of explosives.

No casualties were reported. The incident occurred at 6am at 54 Phan Chu Trinh Street, seconds after Khanh had left home for work.

Young volunteers join charity programmes

HCM City Youth Union volunteers have done charity work in Laos this year as part of the union's Green Summer Campaign. They worked in remote areas providing 3,500 local residents with medical treatment and healthcare services, as well as agricultural and cow-breeding training. Information technology training for young people have also been included.

In central Thua Thien-Hue Province, members of the provincial Youth Union will build 30 charity houses costing nearly VND1 billion (US$50,000), collected from local organisations for poor families living in the remote districts of Phu Vang and Phong Dien.

Bac Ninh attracts 20 FDI projects

Thanks to its preferential policies, the northern province of Bac Ninh's industrial zones attracted 20 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects with total investment capital of US$150 million so far this year. In July, industrial zones offered jobs to more than 10,000 labourers. The management boards have worked to support enterprises in recruitment.

Ministry asks for money to build bridges

The Minister of Transport has proposed to the Government that it spend more than VND1.4 trillion (US$70 million) from Government bonds to rebuild 79 bridges located on highways across the country. The building is expected to begin this year and end in 2015 with a total cost of VND3.2 trillion ($160 million).
