City accelerates land clearance for metro

Thu Duc District has responded to the HCM City's administration's request by speeding up land clearance procedures for the city's Metro Line 1 project, work on which will begin on August 28.

The Metro Line 1, 19.7km long, will run from Ben Thanh Market in District 1 to the Suoi Tien area in District 9. It will pass through Districts 1, 2, Binh Thanh, Thu Duc as well as Binh Duong Province's Di An District.

With a total investment of US$2.2 billion, this is one among six metro lines that have been approved for HCM City. Construction was originally scheduled to begin in 2007, but complicate land clearance procedures had caused long delays.

80,000 new Dong Nai workers need housing

The southern province of Dong Nai's Construction Department estimates that local industrial and economic zones will hire 120,000 more workers by 2015 and 80,000 of these will need accommodation.

To date, about 16 companies in these zones have asked local authorities for permission to buy and/or lease land to build housing for their workers.

The province is currently implementing a trial project that will build 500 apartments for workers in Bien Hoa City and Nhon Trach District.

As of last year, about 400,000 workers were working at economic and industrial zones in Dong Nai, sixty per cent of them migrants from other localities. About 70 per cent of them needed to rent accommodation.
