Poor patients get free cataract surgeries

Surgeons from Quang Ngai General Hospital, in co-operation with Central Eye Hospital, began on Monday the first of 200 cataract operations on poor patients from 14 towns and villages in Son Tinh District. Costs for the surgery were funded by Petrolimex Joint Stock Insurance Company (Pjico).

HCM City starts business survey

HCM City on Monday began the second phase of a survey of both State and private businesses. According to Nguyen Thi Hong, deputy chairwoman of the HCM City People's Committee, the survey collects information about the number of those establishments, the qualifications of employees, labour distribution, and activities. The authorities will use the data to help develop the city's socio-economic development policies.

National steel consumption falls in May

Consumption of steel in June dropped 60,000 tonnes from the total of 290,000 tonnes in May, according to Nguyen Tien Nghi, vice president of the Viet Nam Steel Association. Last month, several steel manufacturers' sales fell by 70 per cent compared with the previous month. About 370,000 tonnes of finished steel, up by 50,000 tonnes from the previous month, is now in storage in the warehouses of manufacturers.
