Former premier supports learning centre
With former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai's approval, a Learning Promotion Fund bearing his name has been founded by Him Lam Co and Lien Viet Commercial Bank. The fund, with an initial capital of VND3 billion (US$142,850), will be used to provide scholarships to underprivileged students in HCM City's Cu Chi District. Later on, the fund hopes to present scholarships to students in remote regions of the country.

Polluting bio-ethanol plant stops operation
The Dung Quat Bio-ethanol Plant in central Quang Ngai Province temporarily stopped operations on Monday and will take time out to solve problems relating to environment pollution, according to Pham Anh Tuan, the plant's director. Since the beginning of this year, shrimp farmers in the neighbourhood have complained at least three times to local authorities about the plant's violation of environmental regulations. Discharges from the plant have killed shrimp and fish that farmers raise in ponds and canals.

Kien Giang Khmer to receive electrical service
Electricity of Viet Nam's Southern Power Corp. (EVN SPC) will start a project next month to supply electricity to nearly 9,000 households, most of them belonging to the ethnic Khmer community in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Kien Giang.
Kien Giang is one of the four Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta provinces to receive electricity from EVN this year under a VND900 billion (US$42.8 million) project. Nearly 55,000 ethnic Khmer households in Kien Giang, Bac Lieu, Tra Vinh and Soc Trang provinces will benefit from the project, its managers said.
