Processed food production falls

The production of processed food in HCM City fell by between 10 per cent and 20 per cent in the first six months of this year because of lower consumption. Some food processing companies said they have cut production by 30 per cent.

Meat consumption has also reduced in the city. Vissan, Viet Nam's biggest supplier of pork, beef and vegetables, sold 10,450 tonnes of pork and 985 tonnes of beef in the first six months of this year, seven and 20 per cent lower than the same period last year, respectively. The producers say the economic recession has forced many city residents to lower food consumption.
